Sky Day celebrating aviation and the skies

Today, and September 20th annually, is Sky Day 空の日 in Japan. It is a celebration of aviation and the skies above Japan. It was initially created as "Aviation Day" in 1940, to commemorate an early milestone in Japanese flight history in 1911. In 1992, it was renamed Sky Day to appeal to a broader audience.

The observance is promoted by Japan's aviation authorities and is often accompanied by events held at airports around the country. Visitors may have the chance to enjoy airport tours, aircraft displays, aviation workshops, and other family-friendly activities designed to spark interest in the world of flight.

The day is an opportunity for people to learn about aviation and appreciate the role that air travel plays in modern life. It also marks the start of a ten day "Air Awareness Campaign Period", sometimes called Sky or Air Week in English, from September 20th to 30th annually.
