Japanese Summer Festivals: Yosakoi
Japan has hundreds of summer festivals, each with its own rhythm, history, and personality. Some are rooted in ancient purification rites, others in celestial legends or regional traditions. And then there is Yosakoi; a festival family that feels unmistakably modern, energetic, and full of color. Even if you’ve never danced Yosakoi yourself, the moment you see it, you understand why it has spread across Japan.
Yosakoi is a relatively new type of summer dance festival, starting in Kochi Prefecture in 1954. It is probably the youngest major summer festival tradition there is in Japan. After the war, Kōchi wanted a summer celebration that would lift spirits and bring communities together. The result was a new style of dance that blended traditional elements with modern music, choreography, and costume design.
And let's not forget the giant, epic flags that accompany each dance troupe. The flags are really what makes Yosakoi special to me. In addition, dancers carry naruko, small wooden clappers originally used in rice fields, that add sound to the rhythm as they move in coordinated teams through the streets. The colorful costumes and rhythmic music set it all off beautifully.
Yosakoi festivals may not have centuries of history behind them, but they embody something deeply Japanese, the ability to blend tradition with innovation, community with creativity. Whether you watch from the sidelines or join a team someday, Yosakoi is a celebration that makes summer feel alive.
