Lakes and Fishing in Japan

We can’t talk about lakes in Japan without mentioning fishing. Across the country, fishing is one of the most common and popular lake activities, enjoyed by families, hobbyists, and seasoned anglers alike. Japan’s lakes are home to a wide variety of fish, including bass, trout, ayu, carp, and wakasagi, making them ideal for both casual outings and more dedicated fishing trips.

Many lakes offer designated fishing areas, rental gear, and even small shops selling bait and permits. In summer, early mornings are especially lively, with anglers lining the shore before the heat sets in. Some lakes even host seasonal fishing events or wakasagi ice‑fishing in winter. Popular spots for fishing in Japan include Lake Kawaguchi and Lake Yamanaka near Mount Fuji, Lake Ashi in Hakone, and Japan's largest lake, Lake Biwa in Shiga. The latter which is globally famous as the birthplace of Japan's trophy bass fishing.
