August 10th: Hat Day in Japan

Among the various commemorations of August 10th is Hat Day 帽子（ハット）の日 (Boshi no Hi) in Japan. The Japanese for hat is 'boshi', but the English is used to which is written as hatto in Japanese, making August 10th (8/10) a good day for the anniversary - "ha (8) tto (10)". 

 Established by the All Japan Hat Association, the day highlights both the cultural history and modern usefulness of hats in Japan. The origins of widespread hat-wearing trace back to 1871, when the Meiji government issued the "danpatsu datto rei", encouraging men to cut their traditional topknots. This shift led hats to spread rapidly as everyday attire, with near‑universal adoption during outings. . By 1890, domestic production began with the founding of Tokyo Hat Co., marking a new era in Japanese hat-making.

The timing of the anniversary also works well as it is the peak of summer. "Hat Day" reminds us of the practical benefits and essentialness of headwear today. Modern hats feature UV protection, quick‑dry fabrics, and water‑repellent materials, making them essential for summer safety and style alike.
