A Commemorative Day for Snoopy in Japan, on his Birthday

Snoopy Day スヌーピーの日 is celebrated on August 10th annually in Japan, on the officially recognized birthday of the world famous beagle from Peanuts. The date comes from a 1968 comic strip in which Charlie Brown and friends cheer "Happy Birthday" to Snoopy, establishing it as his canonical birthday. The anniversary was later formalized by 20th Century Fox as part of the promotion for Snoopy’s first 3D film, I LOVE スヌーピー / The Peanuts Movie.

In Japan, Snoopy’s popularity is extraordinary. It is so strong that “Snoopy” has become synonymous with the Peanuts franchise itself. Having lived here for years, I often forget that Peanuts is the name of the comic strip, not Snoopy! Japan is home to several beloved Snoopy‑themed spaces, including Snoopy Village (pictured), Snoopy Town Shops, Peanuts Café, and seasonal pop‑up stores that draw long lines of visitors. These shops offer exclusive merchandise, special café menus, and photo spots that make the perfect set up for celebrating Snoopy Day.

The cuteness and enduring charm of Snoopy, his humor, imagination, and gentle optimism, continues to resonate deeply in Japan, turning August 10th into a joyful celebration for fans of all ages.
