Japan's population and City-Cost's useful statistics information
Today, and July 11th annually, is World Population Day 世界 人口デー. It is one of the United Nations international days, established in 1989. The anniversary was created to raise awareness about global population issues. The date marks the 1987 milestone when the world population surpassed five billion, symbolized by the birth of a baby boy in Zagreb (Croatia), recognized as the “five‑billionth person”.
Japan’s population is currently estimated at about 122.4 million people, although Wikipedia lists it slightly higher at around 123.4 million as of April 2025. The country’s population reached its peak in 2010 at 128.5 million and has been steadily declining ever since. Meanwhile, Japan’s Immigration Services Agency reported that the number of foreign residents surpassed 3,768,977 in December 2024, reflecting continued growth in the international community even as the overall population shrinks.
Did you know, City‑Cost has an excellent Statistics section that lets readers explore detailed data for every prefecture in Japan? Each page breaks down key information such as total population, number of foreign residents (broken down by country), percentage of children, household trends, income and expenditure patterns, climate details and even crime statistics. It’s a genuinely useful resource for anyone interested in demographics, planning a move, or simply wanting a clearer picture of life across Japan’s prefectures.
