Fresh Autumn Fruits You Can Find in Japanese Supermarkets Right Now

As I introduced earlier in the year, the 8th of every month is "Fruit Day" in Japan. Just yesterday I briefly mentioned some of the seasonal food associated with the current solar term: "Hakuro" aka "White Dew". I thought I would tie Fruit Day into Hakuro and introduce some of the fresh fruits currently available in Japanese supermarkets right now - September 2026.

  • Shine Muscat & Kyoho Grapes: Early autumn is peak grape season. Shine Muscat is crisp and honey‑sweet, while Kyoho offers deep, wine‑like richness.
  • Japanese Pears: Juicy, refreshing, and wonderfully crisp. You’ll find 幸水 and 豊水 varieties right now.
  • Chestnuts: early Autumn's "fruit of the forest".  "Waguri", sold in mesh bags or trays, are particularly popular at this time of year.
  • Persimmons: Firm, sweet ama-gaki varieties are starting to appear as early autumn arrives.
  • Early Season Apples: the first apples of autumn start to appear.
  • Late Season Peaches: the last peaches of the year linger into early September.
  • Early Mikan: Small, slightly tart early‑season mikan begin to show up.
  • Melon: the season is wrapping up, but if you're lucky you can still find some freshly harvested melon. We just picked the last of our homegrown melons yesterday!
  • Late Season Watermelon: still available in cut pieces.
  • Bananas & Pineapples: available all year round, but prices sometimes dip in early Autumn.

Are you seeing any other freshly harvested fruits in your local supermarket at the moment? Or maybe other types of fruit you grew yourself that are coming into season now?
