A Day for Spanish Wine

Spanish Wine Day スペインワインの日 is celebrated in Japan on September 8th annually. The date marks an important milestone in Spain's wine history. The date commemorates the approval of the Wine Law (Estatuto del Vino) on September 8, 1932, a foundational regulation that later shaped Spain’s modern Denomination of Origin system and established the framework for protecting wine quality and regional identity. This law is often considered the starting point of Spain’s contemporary wine industry.

Spain today is a true wine powerhouse, boasting the largest vineyard area in the world and ranking third globally in wine production. I quite like Spanish wine personally and, for red wine, I drink it most when I am at home (Ireland). One of my favorite Spanish wines pictured. One of Spain’s greatest strengths is its diversity: around 150 grape varieties, many of them indigenous, contribute to a wide range of regional styles.

To share this richness with Japanese wine lovers, the Spanish Wine Association established Spanish Wine Day. Each year, a Spanish Wine expo, for traders, is held in Tokyo around this date, offering buyers a chance to explore Spain’s vibrant wine culture firsthand. Unfortunately, it is not open to the general public! But you can pick up Spanish wine in Japan in select supermarkets, drug stores and liquor stores.
