A Surprising Garden First: Wild Mushrooms

After living in the same house for more than 20 years, I had a surprising garden first this summer: wild mushrooms! One morning in August, I spotted a cluster of brown mushrooms growing, something I had never seen before in all my years here. My husband removed them - they grew back, he removed them again - and yet again this morning:

The most likely explanation is this year's unusually wet weather. Apparently, mushrooms are the visible fruiting bodies of fungi that can live underground for years, feeding on decaying roots, wood, and organic matter. All that extra rain may have created the perfect conditions for them to finally emerge.

Have you seen more wild mushrooms than usual this year?
