What a Halloween Photo Spot Reveals About Modern Japan

While walking through a local park yesterday, I came across this charming Halloween photo spot. Decorated with pumpkins, ghosts, a skeleton, and a colorful Halloween backdrop. It looked like the perfect place for a seasonal photo. At first glance I thought it looked a bit on the small size for a family photo, but I guessed it was just for children. However, on closer inspection, I realized it's not for children at all, but for.... dogs! 

When I think back to Halloween events in the past, many were centered around children in costumes, trick-or-treat activities, and family gatherings. These days, however, I seem to notice more events, products, and photo opportunities aimed at pets. Dog cafés, dog strollers, pet-friendly shopping areas, and seasonal pet photo spots are becoming increasingly common.

Of course, that does not mean dogs are more important than children. Still, seeing this Halloween display sparked an interesting question: in a country with fewer children and more people treating pets as family members, are dogs beginning to fill a space that once belonged to kids?
