The description

Famichiki (ファミチキ) is FamilyMart's signature boneless fried chicken, known for its crispy coating and juicy chicken thigh meat. Available nationwide for 248 yen.

The good

Famichiki celebrates 20 years since its debut. First released on October 17t 2006, it remains one of Japan's most popular convenience store hot snacks. Interesting tidbit: when it was first released it only cost 140 yen. Today it will cost you 248 yen (tax included). Which reflects both its enduring popularity as well as the rising costs of ingredients and distribution over the past two decades. In my humble opinion, Famichiki is one of those convenience store foods that has earned its iconic status. Even after twenty years, it remains a reliable treat whenever I visit FamilyMart. The first thing I notice is the crispy, well-seasoned coating. It has a satisfying crunch without feeling overly greasy, and the seasoning is savory enough to be enjoyable on its own. Inside, the chicken is tender and juicy, with plenty of flavor in every bite. Because it is boneless, it is also easy to eat while travelling, walking, or during a quick break.

The not so good

While Famichiki is popular for good reason, it is not without its drawbacks. The first issue is the price. As above, it feels noticeably more expensive than it did in the past, especially for shoppers on a budget. Especially when you compare its price just 20 years ago. A 77% increase is much larger than Japan's overall consumer inflation over the same period. Although the quality is generally good, some customers may hesitate before paying nearly the same amount as a simple lunch item. Even in FamilyMart you can get more filling options for less than the price of Famichiki. The seasoning, while popular, is fairly straightforward and may feel repetitive for frequent buyers. Compared with some limited-edition flavours or specialty fried chicken products, the standard version can seem a little plain after multiple purchases.
