Tupperware Day in Japan

Today, and April 27th annually, is Tupperware Day in Japan. It marks the founding of the Japanese branch of Tupperware in 1963. A moment that helped reshape how households across Japan stored and shared food. 

The anniversary highlights the long journey of the brand, which began in the United States when Earl SIlas Tupper developed durable, airtight plastic containers after discovering the potential of polyethylene during World War II. Reportedly, Tupperware wasn't an instant hit. It wasn't until the now-famous "Tupperware Party" model was developed that Tupperware truly took off.

Tupperware is a natural fit in Japan - with the Japanese food culture of keeping tea leaves, nori, dried foods, pickles etc fresh. Over time, "Tupper" became so familiar that people use it as a generic term for any plastic container, much like 'Hoover' for vacuum cleaners, even though it remains a registered trademark.
