Treetop Athletics - A Different Way to Meet the Forest

Forest and Lake Appreciation Week is underway in Japan until July 31, and over the past several days I’ve been sharing different ways to slow down and enjoy the country’s forests and lakes. Continuing that theme, today’s post looks upward! To Japan’s treetop athletic courses, known as Forest Adventure parks.

Forest Adventure parks are outdoor adventure courses designed to coexist with the forest. Participants move between platforms set high in the trees, crossing rope bridges, zip lines, and balance elements that create a playful but physically engaging route. The concept arrived in Japan around the mid‑2000s, from what I can tell, inspired by European forest adventure parks. They quickly grew in popularity as domestic operators adapted the courses to Japan’s terrain and forestry guidelines.

Today, Forest Adventure locations stretch from Hokkaido to Kyushu, often connected to campgrounds or nature parks. It is not a cheap activity though, with prices starting from around 3,000 yen for adults, but can go right up to 8000 yen or even more depending on the course and duration.  But hey offer a way to meet Japan’s forests from a new angle; an elevated view you never find on the ground.
