The Day to End Japan's overly hot summer

Japan Climate Leaders' Partnership created an anniversary on August 8th called A Day to End to the sweltering summer暑すぎる夏を終わらせる日 (Atsu sugiru natsu o owaraseru hi). A wish and an important initiative and public awareness drive to warn of the dangers of doing nothing to slow global warming.

The idea behind the day is both symbolic and urgent: Japan’s summers are becoming increasingly severe, with record-breaking heat, rising cases of heatstroke, and growing impacts on daily life, agriculture, and infrastructure. JCLP chose August 8 because it falls during the period when the heat feels most intense, and because the number 8, when turned sideways, resembles the infinity symbol. This visual metaphor expresses a warning; if we do nothing, extreme heat will continue without limit.

By establishing this day, JCLP hopes to shift public awareness from simply “enduring the heat” to recognizing it as a climate change issue that demands action. The goal is for society to unite in reducing carbon emissions and eventually make the day unnecessary. In other words, working to a day that ends Japan's overly hot summer.
