World Alzeimher's Day in Japan
Today, September 21st, is World Alzheimer's Day 世界アルツハイマーデー, an international observance dedicated to raising awareness of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. The day was established in 1994 following a declaration adopted at a conference of Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI), with the goal of promoting understanding of the condition and supporting both patients and their families.
In Japan, the day is recognised by the Association of People with Dementia and Their Families (認知症の人と家族の会), which works to provide support, information, and advocacy for those affected by dementia. September is also observed as World Alzheimer's Month, with awareness activities taking place throughout the month.
One of the most visible aspects of the campaign in Japan is the use of the colour orange, which has become a symbol of dementia awareness. Around this date, castles, towers, and other landmarks across the country are illuminated in orange. In addition, lectures, information sessions, and public outreach events help encourage greater understanding of dementia and the challenges faced by patients and their families.
