A Day for Gateau Chocolat

Gâteau au chocolat is a rich French chocolate cake known for its dense texture and intense chocolate flavour. Unlike a light sponge cake, it has a moist, almost fudgy consistency that melts in the mouth. While it would simply be called "chocolate cake" in English, in Japan it is commonly known as gateau chocolat (ガトーショコラ), a name that helps distinguish it from other types of chocolate cakes.

Today, and September 21st annually, is Gateau Chocolate Day in Japan. The commemorative day was established by chef Kenji Ujiie of the specialist cake shop Ken's Cafe Tokyo, which first began selling its signature gateau chocolate on 21st September.

Gateau Chocolate is widely available in Japan due to its popularity. I personally eat it at most when we go out to dinner. Most of the family restaurants have Gateau Chocolate on their menu. The one in the photo in this post is from Bashamichi.
