Shoe Market Day in Japan

Among the many observances, commemorations and anniversaries on September 21st annually is Shoe Market Day 靴市の日 in Japan. The observance is officially recognized and registered by the Japan Anniversary Association.

It was established by Madras Co., Ltd., a shoe manufacturer based in Nagoya that is known for its focus on authentic comfort and craftsmanship as well as its partnership with an Italian shoe manufacturer, thus blending Italian and Japanese shoemaking traditions together. 

The purpose of the day is to encourage interest in shoes through special events and promotions as the autumn and winter shoe season begins in earnest. The date was chosen as a wordplay on September 21st, 9/21, which can be read as "ku (9) tsu (2) ichi (1)", aka "shoe market".
