Fun Souvenirs on the Expressway: Shinshu Kyoho Pocky

One of the joys of stopping at service areas along the Joshin‑Etsu Expressway is discovering the regional snacks you won’t find anywhere else. This Shinshu Kyoho Pocky is a perfect example; a limited‑edition treat made with the deep‑purple Kyoho grapes grown in the highland region of Shinshu, the historical name for present‑day Nagano Prefecture.
The packaging leans into that sense of place: clusters of glossy grapes, a “From Shinshu” stamp, and a label that makes it feel more like a souvenir than just your regular old Pocky! Inside, the Pocky sticks are coated in a soft purple cream that makes them instantly distinctive from regular Pocky.
As we bought them as 'omiyage', I can't review them. Although, I have a vague recollection of tasting them before and finding them delicious. But if you are traveling east on the Joshin-etsu expressway look out for these charming, affordable 'Shinshu' only omiyage.
