A Chance to Reconnect with the Roads We Rely On

Every August, Japan marks Road Interaction Month 道路ふれあい月間, a nationwide initiative inviting people to pause and reconnect with the roads that quietly support daily life. Within that period falls "Road Day" on August 10th. Both commemorations were established by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to encourage people to rediscover the role and importance of roads, and to use them widely and safely.

Throughout the month, communities and road managers work together on hands‑on activities: road cleanups, maintaining planting strips, and removing abandoned bicycles or illegal signboards that clutter public space. Service areas and Michi‑no‑Eki also become hubs for outreach, sharing regional information and promoting thoughtful road use year‑round, not just in August.

There are awareness campaigns, panel displays, and even construction‑site tours for children, helping people see how roads are cared for and why they matter. Our recent family road trip reminded us just how convenient, fun and even beautiful Japan’s roads can be.
