Spring Nationwide Traffic Safety Campaign
Every April, Japan launches the Spring Nationwide Traffic Safety Campaign, a coordinated national effort aimed at reducing accidents and strengthening public awareness of safe road behavior. This year, 2026, I believe the period is from April 6th to 15th.
The initiative began in 1948 under a directive from the National Police Agency, responding to the rapid rise in traffic accidents as automobiles became more common. By 1962, the campaign was elevated to a major government policy, paired with the autumn safety campaign to create a year‑round rhythm of education and prevention.
The goals are broad but deeply practical: encouraging citizens to follow traffic rules, promoting courteous driving and walking habits, and inspiring communities to take part in improving their own road environments. And this year, with the new bicycle laws, there is an emphasis on promoting compliance with traffic rules for cyclists and certain types of small, motorized bicycles.
