Helicopter day, recognizing the ingenuity and capabilities
Each year April 15th is Helicopter Day ヘリコプターの日 in Japan. It honors the extraordinary aircraft that have reshaped modern transportation, rescue work, and our understanding of the skies.
The date is tied to the birthday of Leonardo da Vinci, whose 15th century sketch of a spiraling air screw is considered the conceptual ancestor of the helicopter. Although da Vinci never built a working model, limited by materials at the time, his drawing captured the essential idea of rising through a rotating life. A principle that would not be realized until centuries later.
The commemorative day was established in 1986 by the All Japan Helicopter Association to highlight the importance of helicopters. Today, helicopters play vital roles in disaster relief, medical transport, mountain rescue, news reporting and reaching places no other vehicle can.
