Road Appreciation Month in Japan

Roads are among the most fundamental forms of social infrastructure. They support commerce, emergency services, travel, and the simple act of moving from one place to another. Yet because they’re always there, always beneath us, their importance is often overlooked.

But in Japan, communities take time each August to acknowledge the roads that quietly sustain daily life thanks to Road Appreciation Month 道路ふれあい月間. It is a nationwide effort led by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to help people reconnect with the roads they use every day. During this month, the public is encouraged to rediscover the role and value of roads and to use them widely, respectfully, and safely.

Across the country, road managers and local residents join together for activities like road cleanups, planting and maintaining greenery, and removing abandoned bicycles or illegal signboards. Service areas and Michi‑no‑Eki become hubs for outreach, sharing regional information and promoting safe, thoughtful road use throughout the year; not just in August. 

There are also public-awareness campaigns, panel displays, and even construction‑site tours for children, giving communities a chance to see how roads are cared for and kept safe. It's a good time of year for the campaign as many people use roads for long distance trips during the Obon period, either to return to their hometowns or go on a family holiday.
