Microseason: Thick Fog Descends
The 39th, of 72, microseason of the year is Thick Fog Descends 蒙霧升降 (Fukaki kiri matō). In 2026, it is on from August 18th for five days to the 22nd, marking the third and final microseason of the Solar Term “Beginning of Autumn.”
During this microseason, dense fog becomes the defining feature. That is thanks to the evenings finally cooling down. The shift between cold nights and warm mornings creates this thick, concealing fog known as mōmu (蒙霧). However, in the name of the microseason it is pronounced as fukaki kiri. These mists blur familiar landscapes, creating an otherworldly quality like being in the clouds.
Although, the main period of Obon has passed, some people may still be traveling, and a few municipalities have yet to hold their Bon Odori or fireworks events. Summer festivals will continue too. For most, though, this microseason marks a collective return to everyday life. The pace of life settles after the mid‑August rush. Children and students, however, remain on summer break. Many are likely hurrying through the last pages of their obligatory summer homework, trying to finish before the new term begins.
This microseason is associated with the emergence of new ginger (shin-shoga). People continue to eat foods that help with summer fatigue, such as cold somen noodles, grilled eel and seasonal pickles. "Kakigori", shaved Ice is still in high demand, as hot days persist. In some regions, grapes are becoming ripe for picking.
