Learning through travel - Obuse is a Chestnut Town

The moment we stepped out of the car in Obuse Parking Area (Tokyo Bound) we knew something straight away about the town's identity. Before we even got inside, a large sign for chestnut ice-cream, exclusive to the Parking Area, greeted us at the entrance. Once inside, there were chestnut souvenirs and signs everywhere. Then I spotted the sign, declaring that Obuse is a Chestnut Town, as if I was even in doubt!

It would seem Obuse's relationship with chestnuts runs deep, with over 600 years of cultivation and craftsmanship shaping the town's food culture and making chestnuts its most recognizable treause. You see this legacy everywhere; cafes offering chestnut‑infused dishes, shops specializing in chestnut confections, and seasonal treats that draw visitors from across Nagano. My son just had to try the "exclusive" chestnut flavored ice-cream at the parking area, and it didn't disappoint.

Beyond the sweets, Obuse’s chestnut heritage is rooted in place. Chestnut Alley, lined with the very trees that built the town’s reputation, offers a glimpse into the agricultural history that sustained generations. Local farms continue to produce chestnuts alongside apples and grapes, keeping the region’s rural rhythms alive.
