Learning through travel - Arukuma is the Mascot of Nagano

On a recent trip to the Hokuriku region, we did a tour of the Joshin-etsu expressway's parking and service areas on the way home. The Joshin‑etsu Expressway winds its way between the coastal prefectures of Hokuriku and Nagano’s interior highlands, linking mountain valleys to the Sea of Japan.

During that 'tour', I learned many new things. For example, until that trip, I didn't know what the mascot of Nagano was. Now I know its "Arukuma". Arukuma is a portmanteau of "aruku", meaning to walk and "kuma" meaning bear: the walking bear.  Arukuma, pictured, is a small green bear who's always on the move!

Because Nagano is cold, he always wears a hat. An apple hat is the most common, but he reportedly changes it sometimes to represent the many places and experiences across Nagano.  Arukuma is often shown wandering through mountains, hot springs, orchards, and local festivals; a reminder that Nagano is, at heart, hiking country.

Arukuma does his job as a mascot well, representing some of the key elements of Nagano's identity.
