Celebrating Railway Day One Yellow Train at a Time
Every year on October 14th Japan celebrates Railway Day, commemorating the opening of the country's first railway. I don't use trains often. There are no train stations, or even railway lines, in my town. When I do take the train, it's usually the Tobu Tojo Line from Kawagoe or Kawagoeshi Station.
However, since April this year I've had reason to use the Seibu Line occasionally. I can catch it from either Hon-Kawagoe or Minami-Otsuka stations. Last week, when I rode it, I was delighted to find myself on one of Seibu's classic yellow trains. Most of the time the trains I see are the newer aluminium-coloured ones, so it felt like a bit of a treat.
It turned out to be a particularly lucky day. After changing trains, I ended up on another yellow Seibu train. Then, later in the journey, I transferred to the Chuo-Sobu Line, probably Tokyo's most famous yellow train. Three yellow trains in one day is probably the closest thing I've had to a railway-themed adventure in quite some time.
