Today, and June 10th annually, is T‑Shirt Day Tシャツデー in Japan. It was established by WITS Co., Ltd., a company headquartered in Iwamotochō, Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. The date of the anniversary was chosen because early June marks the start of Japan’s humid rainy season, when T‑shirts begin to shine as the most comfortable and practical clothing for the coming summer.

The purpose of the day is to encourage people to “bring out” the T‑shirts they love but rarely wear, those bought on trips, received as gifts, or purchased on impulse but left forgotten in drawers. By wearing these tucked‑away shirts with confidence, the day aims to revive memories associated with them and spark cheerful conversations like “I didn’t know you had a shirt like that!”

T‑Shirt Day was officially recognized by the Japan Anniversary Association in 2020. It reflects Japan’s fondness for commemorative days that celebrate everyday joys and seasonal habits. As temperatures rise and summer approaches, the day encourages people across Japan to enjoy the comfort, individuality, and nostalgia that a simple T‑shirt can bring.
