Japan and the World Post Day

Japan celebrates the postal service on April 20th every year, but World Post Day falls on October 9th annually. There may be some smaller events or acknowledgements of the global commemoration in parts of Japan, but overall, it is not a large or widely recognized commemoration here in Japan.

However, Japan has an interesting connection to World Post Day. World Post Day was officially established at a Universal Postal Congress held in Tokyo in 1969, making Japan the birthplace of the international observance, although the proposal itself was put forward by an Indian delegate.

Yesterday, Helloalissa wrote an interesting post about letter writing in the digital age. is very timely, because apart from today being World Post Day, this week is also International Letter Writing Week 国際文通週間 in Japan.
