Faraway Talk Day: A Reminder to Stay Connected
Today, and October 9th annually, is Faraway Talk Day 遠くトークの日 in Japan, a recently established commemorative day that encourages people to reconnect with loved ones who live far away. The date is based on a Japanese wordplay linking the numbers 10 (to) and 9 (ku) to the phrase tōku talk, meaning "faraway talk".
In an age when messaging apps make it easy to stay in touch, it can be surprisingly easy to let weeks or even months pass without having a meaningful conversation with friends or family. Faraway Talk Day serves as a gentle reminder to reach out, whether through a phone call, video chat, or even a simple message.
For many foreign residents in Japan, the idea may feel especially relatable. Living abroad often means being separated from parents, siblings, old friends, and familiar communities. Time differences and busy schedules can make regular communication challenging, but hearing a familiar voice can instantly make the distance feel smaller.
Unintentional as I think it is, there seems to be a bit of a theme to some of today's commemorations and anniversaries in Japan. Between World Post Day, the start of International Letter Writing Week and Faraway Talk Day, they are a reminder to stay connected across the distance.
