A Day for Self-Storage and Trunk Rooms in Japan
Today, and October 9th annually, is Trunk Room Day トランクルームの日 in Japan. It is a commemorative day established by the Japan Self Storage Association (JSSA). The date was chosen as the first syllables of 10/9 can be read "to" and "ru", the start of "Toranku Ruumu" (Trunk Room).
The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of trunk rooms, also known as self-storage facilities, and encourage their use among both households and businesses. As living and working spaces become increasingly crowded, storage solutions can help people organize belongings, reduce clutter, and create a more comfortable daily environment.
Trunk rooms are used to store items that are not needed every day, such as seasonal clothing, books, hobby equipment, outdoor gear, collections, office documents, and business supplies. In Japan, the service has a long history, dating back to 1931 when warehouse operators first began offering trunk room storage. They are a practical solution to limited living space, especially in urban areas.
