A Small Celebration of a Very Special Egg

April 10th annually is Yodo Egg Day ヨード卵の日 in Japan. It is a commemorative day created by the company behind one of Japan's ost recognizable branded eggs: Yodo Egg, Hikari. But the story behind it reaches back nearly half a century.

First sold in 1976, these eggs were Japan’s earliest branded variety, and they’ve stayed on supermarket shelves ever since, thanks to their distinctive production method and loyal fan base. What makes them special is the hens’ diet, which was created after 20 years of research. Reportedly it mixes seaweed powder and high‑quality fish meal into the feed, the hens naturally absorb iodine, which then transfers into the eggs.

The eggs are scientifically proven to be 3.5 times richer than ordinary eggs and have much more iodine in them than normal. Iodine is a nutrient essential for healthy thyroid function, metabolism and children's growth.
