A day for siblings
April 10th marks Siblings Day, known in Japan as きょうだいの日 (kyodai no hi) or シブリングデー, a commemoration dedicated to celebrating the unique bond between brothers and sisters. Coincidently I got a photo just this past weekend of a shop called "Siblings" which makes the perfect cover photo for this post!
In Japan, the day was established by the Osaka‑based NPO Shibutane, an organization that supports children who have siblings living with illness or disability. The date traces back to the birthday of the American woman whose advocacy led to the creation of Siblings Day in the United States, where the observance has been recognized since the 1990s and is promoted by the Siblings Day Foundation.
What makes the Japanese version distinctive is its focus on the often‑overlooked emotional world of “well siblings.” These children frequently navigate complex feelings - responsibility, worry, pride, and sometimes loneliness - while their families manage medical challenges. Across countries, Siblings Day highlights gratitude, connection, and the quiet strength of sibling relationships.

Former nickname was "Saitama". Changed it to save confusion on place review posts! Irish, 20+ years in Japan! I also write on my personal website: insaitama.com
