Zero Loss Day

Among the various anniversaries of April 14th in Japan is one that shines the light on the issue of food waste. Zero Loss Day ロスゼロの日. The anniversary was created by a company called "Beautiful Smile" who are behind the "Loss Zero" online shop.

The "Loss Zero" website rescues edible food items that lose their sales window after major seasonal events such as Valentines Day and White day. The date, exactly one month after White Day, was chosen to make the anniversary easy to remember. Through its ecommerce platform Loss Zero gives "mottanai" foods a second chance and turning potential waste into affordable treats.

Japan’s annual food loss from manufacturers and producers alone reaches an astonishing 1.4 million tons, much of it caused by strict retail standards or forecasting mismatches rather than quality issues. "Zero Loss Day" encourages people to rethink the value of food, support sustainable purchasing, and appreciate the unseen labor behind every ingredient.
