Anime Pilgrimage Spot: Washinomiya Shrine

The pictures on the ema, Japanese prayer plaques, above were drawn by fans of Lucky Star. They are on display at what is known as the Lucky Star Shrine, officially Washinomiya Shrine. Located in Kuki City, Saitama Prefecture, it is one of Saitama's most famous anime pilgrimage destinations.
The shrine is known among anime fans as the real-life inspiration for the shrine featured in the series Lucky Star. Since the anime's popularity exploded, fans have travelled from across Japan and overseas to visit the historic site.
What makes a visit especially interesting is that Washinomiya Shrine is more than just an anime location. It is also considered one of the oldest shrines in the Kanto region and is home to several important cultural assets.
One of the most charming touches comes during the shrine's summer festivities, when a handmade Lucky Star mikoshi (portable shrine) is paraded as part of the celebrations.
The blend of centuries-old tradition and modern pop culture makes Washinomiya Shrine a uniquely Japanese destination and a memorable stop for both anime fans and history lovers alike.
