Neon Genesis Evangelion Manhole Cover Art in Tokorozawa

After passing by several manhole covers in Tokorozawa Sakura Town featuring artwork from anime I'd never even heard of, I eventually spotted one series I actually recognized. This illuminated Neon Genesis Evangelion manhole cover was one of several anime-themed designs in the entertainment town beside Tokyo. With Anime Day falling today, October 22nd, it seemed like the perfect excuse to finally share it.

Unlike some of the other anime featured on the route, Evangelion was already familiar to me by name. I've seen clips from the series over the years and have even visited the Evangelion-themed service area in Shizuoka, and seen other statues in Tokyo too. That said, I've never actually sat down and watched a full episode.

Even so, spotting familiar characters on a manhole cover was a reminder of just how deeply anime is woven into everyday life in Japan. Whether you're a devoted fan or simply aware of a series through cultural osmosis, these decorative covers are a fun way to connect local places with popular culture.
