Anime Pilgrimage Spot: Ashigaoka School from Non Non Biyori

For fans of the anime Non Non Biyori, there is a location in Ogawa Town Saitama Prefecture, that will feel instantly familiar. The former Shimozato Elementary School is widely recognized as the real-life inspiration for the Ashigaoko Branch School - the tiny rural school featured in the beloved slice-of-life anime.
Nestled among the countryside scenery of Ogawa, the former school captures much of the nostalgic atmosphere that made the anime so memorable. Although the setting in Non Non Biyori is fictional, many visitors are surprised by just how closely the real location resembles the quiet, countryside world depicted in the series.
Even for those who have never watched Non Non Biyori, the former school (which is no longer in use) is worth a stop. The traditional school building, open grounds and peaceful surroundings make it an attractive destination for photographers and travelers looking to explore a quieter side of Saitama.
It looks particularly beautiful during the cherry blossom season. You can check out more photos, including the school framed by cherry blossoms, on my personal website In Saitama, which was the inspiration for this post on this Anime Day in Japan.
