Sustainable Fashion Day - Rethinking the Life of Our Clothes

August 8th is Sustainable Fashion Day サステナブルファッションの日 in Japan. It is a relatively new commemorative day established in 2023 by Vector Co., Ltd. I love seeing commemorative days that offer more than a lighthearted celebration, inviting us instead to reflect on meaningful, real‑world issues.

The date of "Sustainable Fashion Day" carries symbolic meaning: when the number 8 is turned sideways, it becomes the infinity symbol, a reminder that clothing can circulate, be reused, and live far longer than a single season. Two eights together look like a chain and thus represent cooperation, between companies, individuals, and communities, all working toward a future with less waste.

Japan faces a serious clothing‑waste problem. Each year, the country supplies about 820,000 tons of apparel, according to a survey by the Ministry of the Environment, yet roughly 70% of it is discarded. That adds up to around 480,000 tons of clothing thrown away annually. Only a small portion is reused or recycled, and the environmental impact of producing new garments continues to grow.

Sustainable Fashion Day encourages people to reconsider their habits. Choosing long‑lasting items, using reuse shops, exploring flea‑market apps, and reviewing our closets on August 8th are small steps that help reduce waste and extend the life of the clothes we already own.
