The description
A Halloween Mont Blanc from Patisserie Mon Plaisir: a classic chestnut dessert into a fun seasonal treat. Decorated with a monster face and festive toppings.
The good
I bought this Halloween Mont Blanc for my youngest daughter who loves Mont Blanc desserts. Despite being from Europe and visiting France the home of Mont Blanc reportedly, before moving to Japan I had never even heard of it. Had you!? Mont Blanc is hugely popular in Japan and is usually made with chestnut cream piped into delicate strands over cream, sponge cake, or a meringue base. It has become one of the desserts I most associate with autumn in Japan, when chestnut-flavored sweets seem to appear everywhere. What makes this version especially enjoyable is its playful Halloween design. Rather than the usual elegant mountain shape, the cake has been transformed into a cheerful monster complete with a single eyeball, a mischievous smile, and a tiny Halloween hat.
The not so good
While this Halloween Mont Blanc is beautifully made and undeniably charming, there are a few reasons it may not appeal to everyone. The most obvious is the price. At ¥710 for a single serving, it is firmly in pâtisserie territory rather than an everyday dessert. For the same amount, some shoppers could purchase several supermarket sweets or even a small cake or two or three tarts to share with family. The novelty of the decoration may also create expectations that are not entirely reflected in the flavor. Beneath the Halloween appearance, it is still essentially a traditional Mont Blanc, which means chestnut cream remains the dominant taste. People unfamiliar with Mont Blanc desserts may expect something more chocolate-focused or Halloween-themed and could be surprised by the earthy, nutty chestnut flavor.
