Gundam Manhole Covers: Old Meets New in Tokorozawa
Among the anime-themed manhole covers around Tokorozawa Sakura Town, the Gundam designs were the easiest for me to recognise. As one of Japan's most influential anime franchises, Mobile Suit Gundam has been captivating fans for generations, and the two covers here offer an interesting contrast between old and new.

The first cover has a distinctly retro feel. Featuring signed artwork from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, it showcases Char Aznable alongside his iconic red mobile suit. The bold colours and classic character artwork evoke the early days of the franchise, while the cover itself commemorates the 70th anniversary of Tokorozawa City's municipal system. For long-time fans, it feels like a tribute to Gundam's roots.
A short distance away is a newer illuminated manhole cover, also based on The Origin. Unlike the earlier design, this version uses a modern backlit display that stands out after dark. The artwork features the RX-78 Gundam together with a young pilot, creating a cleaner and more contemporary look. The illuminated format gives the cover a futuristic edge, which feels fitting for a series built around giant robots and advanced technology.
Seeing the two covers side by side is a reminder of how Gundam continues to evolve while honouring its history. One celebrates the franchise's classic imagery, while the other embraces newer technology, making them a fitting pair within Sakura Town's collection of anime-themed street art.
