Lovers' Day weirdly connected to St Anthony
There are less official anniversaries and observances on June 12th than recent days. But there are also a few informal anniversaries that are not registered with the Japanese Anniversary Association, but are pretty well known among Japanese people. For example, Lovers' Day 恋人の日 (Koibito no hi). The anniversary was established by the National Federation of Photo Frame Associations.
The anniversary has a surprising connection to Saint Anthony, a popular and one of the most famous saints in the Catholic religion. This is because in Portugal and Brazil, June 12th is associated with Saint Anthony. And St Anthony is known as the protector of women and a patron of matchmaking, marriage and love. Seemingly, on the eve of his feast day, families, friends, and couples traditionally exchange photos or small tokens of affection. The Japanese anniversary draws inspiration from this custom, blending it with the photo‑frame industry’s wish to promote the sentimental value of printed photographs.
In Japan, Lovers’ Day is less about commercial romance and more about appreciating the bonds that shape our lives. Whether it’s a partner, a close friend, or a family member, the day invites people to pause, choose a meaningful photo, and share a moment of connection.
