A celebration of Magic and Millions of visitors!
Today, and April 15th annually, is Tokyo Disneyland Opening Anniversary 東京ディズニーランド開園記念日. On this day in 1983 Tokyo Disneyland opened its gates for the first time. According to official records, the park welcomed 25,000 guests on its first day.
Tokyo Disneyland quickly became a beloved destination for people across Japan. And over the years it has become increasingly popular with people from overseas too. It was the first Disney theme park ever built outside the United States. An honor in itself. It was a milestone that symbolized both global connection and uniquely warm hospitality that would define the Tokyo Disney experience.
By the end of its first fiscal year nearly 10 million people had already visited the theme park. A sign of the deep affection the park would continue to inspire. Attendance has continued to surge over the years. The last official figure I could find is ten years old, but by 2016, more than 660 million had visited the park since its opening in 1983. Sometimes it feels like there's that many there in one day!
