The description

This "Dagashiya" product is a novelty “100 million yen” snack bundle - five pieces - styled like a stack of bills, complete with Shibusawa himself! Inside are individually packed fish‑paste 'chinmi'.

The good

"Chinmi" refers to a rare and delicious food, often characterized by unique flavor and / or preservation techniques. This "100 million" yen fish paste "dagashiya" (traditional candy shop) product is certainly unique. As I bought this in a Dagashiya it was just the one 'bundle' with five pieces, but you can buy them in bulk in some supermarkets and online. People often buy them in bulk for sharing at parties and / or celebrations, such as New Years, when many people are around. The packaging is really fun, mimicking the Japanese bank notes. They even have a picture of Eichi Shibusawa on them! The price is good too.

The not so good

Despite its fun presentation, this “100 Million Yen Delicacy Bank Note” set may not suit everyone. The packaging is elaborate, but the chinmi inside is very simple; a basic fish‑paste snack with a salty, old‑school flavor. I'd say there have been many a disappointed child over the year, when they saw the fun packaging thinking it was something either sour or sweet only to discover it was a fish snack! Those expecting something richer or more modern may feel underwhelmed. The bundle also creates a lot of paper and plastic waste for what is essentially a gag‑style product. if you’re not into traditional chinmi, the flavor may feel too strong or too plain. It’s fun and eye‑catching, but more of a novelty item than a satisfying treat.
