A random anniversary for Pedestrian Bridges!

Today, and April 25th annually, is Pedestrian Bridge Day 歩道橋の日 in Japan. It never ceases to amaze me how many seemingly arbitrary anniversaries there are! But Pedestrian Bridge does mark a significant moment in urban and foot traffic safety.

On this day in 1963 the first modern pedestrian overpass was completed in front of Osaka Station. There had been another build even earlier though, in 1959 at a school in Aichi Prefecture. In a time when rapid motorization was transforming Japanese cities, the first pedestrian overpasses were a step toward reducing the number of traffic accidents involving pedestrians. They reduced dangerous crossings on increasingly busy roads.

Today, many bridges are aging, and use is declining due to accessibility challenges. You will also occasionally find pedestrian bridges that have been closed off to use. And every now and then you come across a scenario like in the photo below - where construction was halted before completion and you end up with a staircase that doesn't lead to the overpass!

Have you seen any pedestrian bridges that are no longer in use or a scenario like the one in the photo below?
