Within Reach, Just out of Grasp
Japan's World Cup journey has come to an end. With it comes that familiar mix of pride and heartbreak that Japanese fans know so well. I have to say, I am gutted for them. Especially as after the first half of today's match against Brazil, when Japan was up a goal, there really was some hope. Progressing was within reach, but ultimately just out of grasp.
Like every child in Ireland, my home country, I grew up playing soccer, or football as we call it. Many people join soccer clubs, but most just play it casually in the fields and on the street. I am a soccer Mom now too. But I am certainly no expert. However, I have always enjoyed watching the game. Particularly World Cup games. Half of my family even got up at 2 am this morning to support the Samurai Blue.
It is so sad their journey is now over, but huge congratulations to the team on giving us more highs than lows and making it a memorable World Cup for many. Even though they didn't progress, it was clear to see why the Samurai Blue are so deeply loved in Japan. Their resilience always shines. Moreover, in recent years, the team has gone from strength to strength. They belong on the world stage, competing with the very best, but I think Japan's best is yet to come.

Former nickname was "Saitama". Changed it to save confusion on place review posts! Irish, 20+ years in Japan! I also write on my personal website: insaitama.com
