Grateful for a cooler than usual June

Officially, the preliminary temperature reports for June suggest that the average temperatures for June 2026 were slightly higher than average for the Kanto region of Japan. However, this month we used our air conditioner much less than an average June. The 'real feel' was, in my opinion, much lower than average in the area I live in (Saitama Prefecture) this year.

It certainly felt a lot cooler, particularly in comparison to last year when the rainy season started and ended early and we were already enduring stifling heat this time last year. In June 2025, we had about 15 days when the temperatures were above 30 degrees Celsius. This year we have had none. June 2025 was the hottest on record though. But even in an average year Saitama Prefecture typically gets between 5 and 10 days above 30 degrees in June, so we did well with zero days this year.

The biggest aid to the lower than average 'real feel' is that it hasn't been that humid yet this year. In the last two days we are seeing a slight increase in humidity, but thankfully it's still bearable. I, for one, am particularly grateful that this June was nothing like last year and that I have been able to live without air conditioning for most of the month. Especially as it looks like July is going to be hot and muggy.

How was your June? Did you find it hotter / cooler than usual?
