Microseason: First Frost Falls

Microseason: First Frost Falls photo

First Frost Falls 霜始降 (Shimo Hajimete Furu) is the fifty-second of Japan's seventy-two microseasons. As the first microseason of the solar term Sōkō (Frost Descent), it typically falls from around October 23rd to October 27th. The Japanese literally translates to "first frost falls", marking the time of year when frost begins to appear on the ground and on plants during cold, clear mornings.

The expression reflects careful observations of seasonal changes made by earlier generations. Although frost does not arrive everywhere in Japan at the same time, this microseason acknowledges the first signs of winter approaching. In Japanese, frost is described as something that "falls," much like rain or snow, emphasizing its arrival as a seasonal event rather than simply a weather condition.

Traditionally, the appearance of frost served as an important signal for farmers. Frost could damage vulnerable crops, making it a reminder to complete any remaining harvests before temperatures dropped further. At the same time, some vegetables were known to benefit from colder weather, becoming sweeter after exposure to frost.

Today, the seasonal transition can be seen in many ways. Autumn colors continue to spread, persimmons ripen on increasingly bare branches, while seasonal produce such as daikon radishes, sweet potatoes, chestnuts, and persimmons become common sights in shops and markets. Crisp mornings, clear skies, and the possibility of the year's first frost make Shimo Hajimete Furu one of the clearest reminders that winter is drawing near.
