The description
Starbucks' Torori Mitsuimo Beni Haruka Mousse Tea Latte combines tea, milk, sweet potato paste, and roasted sweet potato sauce for a creamy autumn-inspired drink.
The good
I think this tea latte is one of their more innovative products. It almost sounds too ambitious, but they really pull it off. Sweet potato in drinks is relatively common in my area of Saitama, but usually as a add-in rather than the central flavor. So, I just had to try this tea latte. I am so glad I did. The first thing I noticed was the sweet potato sauce lining the cup, which added both visual appeal and extra flavour. The drink itself was creamy and smooth, with the sweetness of the Beni Haruka sweet potato coming through nicely without tasting artificial. I also liked that the tea base helped keep the drink from becoming overly heavy. As I mixed in the sauce from the bottom, the flavor became richer and more dessert-like. It felt very autumnal and reminded me of roasted sweet potatoes.
The not so good
Although I enjoyed the sweet potato flavour, I thought the drink was sweeter than necessary. Much of the sweetness comes from the sauce and sweet potato components, which occasionally made it difficult to notice the tea underneath. The flavour was pleasant at first, but by the end of the cup it felt a little rich for my tastes. I also found that the sauce settled toward the bottom, so the final few sips were noticeably sweeter than the beginning unless the drink was mixed thoroughly. However, all that being said, as it is a time-limited offering, I think it is worth ordering and the 640 yen price tag is fair all things considered.
