What happened to all the foreign dramas?

In the late noughties and early 2010s, there was a selection of foreign dramas you could watch on Japanese television. A lot of them were Korean, but there were a couple of English language ones too, mainly from America.

I remember when my children were small, every weekday around lunch time they showed an American drama. At first it was at 12.30 pm, but later it changed to 1.30 pm. Off the top of my head, the American dramas I remember watching include all of the CSI, Person of Interest, Chicago Fire, ER, Gray's Anatomy and later, White Collar, Suits and Drop Dead Diva.

It took a while to find the information, but it seems it was TV Tokyo that aired these shows in a slot called "Lunch Channel" and they stopped in 2018. I suppose that was around the time that streaming was becoming more available and popular. Netflix was already around three years at that stage in Japan.

I didn't have Netflix back then, but I do since the pandemic. But sometimes I do miss the regular lunch time American drama on regular television! I was certainly very grateful during that period that I could watch an hour of overseas drama five days a week!
