Japanese Summer Festivals: Neputa Festivals

Japan has hundreds of summer festivals, each with its own rhythm, history, and personality.  I have been introducing some of them in this series "Japan Summer Festivals".  In Aomori, two festival families dominate the season: Nebuta and Neputa. But while Aomori is renowned as the home of both, other towns and cities outside the prefecture also have Nebuta and Neputa festivals annually. Most often in summer, but in some locations they have them at a different time of the year.

Nebuta and Neputa share a similar name and glowing floats, but the biggest difference is the style of float. The Nebuta has 3D characters on the floats whereas Neputa floats are fan shaped. Neputa festivals trace their origins to the same seasonal traditions that shaped Nebuta: summer purification rites, Tanabata customs, and the idea of driving away misfortune with light and movement. But while Nebuta evolved into fierce warrior lanterns and energetic haneto dancers, Neputa developed a calmer, more reflective style.

Neputa floats are mostly fan‑shaped, painted with dramatic scenes on the front and elegant beauty portraits on the back. The procession moves slowly, accompanied by deep taiko rhythms and the powerful call of “Ya-yaa, do-oi!” It is a quieter type of magic. The floats glow softly as they turn through narrow streets, revealing their contrasting faces; bravery on one side, beauty on the other. The pace is steady, almost hypnotic, and the atmosphere feels closer to a traditional procession than a parade.
