The Illness Born from Husbands: Japan’s Fugenbyō
While uncharacteristically doomscrolling social media yesterday, I came across a post that piqued my interest. It was about "fugenbyo" (夫源病) which literally means "husband origin illness", when your husband is the cause of your illness! Specifically in this case manifestations of stress.
The stress, exhaustion, or even physical symptoms which some women claim to experience when their husbands are suddenly home all the time, especially after retirement! It’s not a medical diagnosis. It’s a social observation wrapped in humor, empathy, and a touch of honesty. The term was popularized by Japanese psychiatrist Kawashima Tomoko. She noticed that women who had spent decades managing the household suddenly found themselves with a full‑time husband at home; and their stress levels spiked!
A woman who had been used to her own pace and space for years now finds herself contending with a husband at home all day, every day! The shift can be particularly pronounced in Japan, where traditional gender roles and retirement shock hit collide after decades of a husband being uninvolved in and away from the house for years. Their sudden 24-7 presence causing a dramatic change of rhythm has left Japan needing a word for husband-origin illness: fugenbyo!

Former nickname was "Saitama". Changed it to save confusion on place review posts! Irish, 20+ years in Japan! I also write on my personal website: insaitama.com
